Bags vs Bulk: When a Delivery Beats the Bag Aisle

Bulk materials live in two worlds: bags at the store, or a truck dumping cubic yards on your driveway. Here are the conversions between them, what a yard of each material weighs, and where the crossover sits.

How many bags in a cubic yard?

A cubic yard is 27 cu ft. The bag count is just 27 divided by what's in the bag:

MaterialStandard bagBags per cubic yard
Mulch2 cu ft13.5
Topsoil40 lb ≈ 0.75 cu ft36
Sand50 lb ≈ 0.5 cu ft54
GravelSold by weight≈ 1.4 tons per cubic yard

Each of our bulk calculators, Mulch, Topsoil, Gravel, Sand, shows both numbers for your exact area and depth, so the comparison is made on your job, not a generic one.

What a yard weighs (before you volunteer your trailer)

MaterialWeight per cubic yard
Gravel / crushed stone≈ 2,800 lb (about 1.4 tons)
Sand (dry)≈ 2,700 lb (about 1.35 tons)
Topsoil2,000–2,400 lb depending on moisture
MulchLight. The constraint is volume, not weight

Wet soil after rain is noticeably heavier than the same yard dry. A small trailer's payload disappears fast. Check its plate before the loader does.

Where the crossover sits

Once a job passes roughly 3 cubic yards, that's 40+ bags of mulch, a bulk delivery usually wins on both price and effort. Below that, bags win on convenience: no delivery minimum, no pile on the driveway, and you can stage them where the work is. Between one and three yards it genuinely depends on your local delivery fee, which is why the calculators show the bag count and the yards side by side.

When bags still win at any size

  • No truck access to where the material lands. Bags walk through a side gate, a dump load doesn't.
  • The job is spread over weekends: bags wait patiently; a soil pile grows weeds and washes away.
  • Several small areas in different materials: one trip, four bag types, no minimums.

Whichever way you buy, the quantity maths is the same: area × depth, from the calculators above.
